Košice - the second largest town in Slovakia is situated in eastern part of Slovakia, near borderline with Hungary (20 kilometers), Ukraine (80 kilometers) and Poland (90 kilometers). Amenity of Košice made the city an important point on the paths of commerce in the past, proximity of rail junction and international airport contributes to fact, that nowadays it is a crucial economic agglomeration, as well as the crossing of the transportation routes. Hlavná ulica ( The Main Street) is undoubtedly the very street, which City of Košice definitely takes pride in, the most beautiful and the most historical place in town. Originally a medieval square maintained its spindle-shaped platform from the past times, typical for majority of the towns in eastern Slovakia. Hand in hand with changes of political regimes the designation of the street had been changing too. Until 1918 it had been Fö-utca, than in 1934 it was simply The Main Street (Hlavná Ulica).For four years it had been called Štefánikova and until spring of 1945 it had been transformed again to Fö-utca,and than again Štefánikova and until the end of 60's period it had been called Street of Vladimir Iľjič Lenin,after that just Leninova street until the end of 1990 when the original abbreviation for the street was restored in the Hlavná form. Cermel stream had been dividing at Mariánský stĺp (Mariánsky column) creating some kind of island amid the Main street. In 1805,stone wall around Urban tower and both churches was pulled down.
In 1840 building of side-walks started, which intensified after the flood in 1845, when water floated all of the cellars and lower fields. From historical documentation we can see, that the area of the Main street around the theater was the central market place. When the construction of the new theater was finished between theatre and Urban tower was created a city park with pseudo gothic fountain. There was a fence around the park and it used to be closed for the night. Next to the Urban tower there was a bread market . Across Main street in the past flowed Cermel stream, which was by reason of development of the city traffic landed up. Nowadays as a reminder of the creek there is a miniature imitation of the stream. Together with Mlynska street and part of Alžbetina street the Main street is a pedestrian area. The most of the important monuments are situated in the historical centre of the city. The Main street consists of three parks with fountains, the biggest is the singing fountain situated between the church of Saint Elisabeth and the theatre. And exactly these buildings are the dominants of the town ,together with the Chapel of Saint Michael, Church of Premonstrants Urban tower, Old town hall, Levoca‘s house, plague pillar. Closely related to the main street is the main square, which is situated in the entrance to the city centre from the side of so called Square of Liberators. In Košice you can also find a wide range of sport activities. During summer time is the most interesting the water skiing with the ski lift at the city lake. In the winter time there are also a lots of choices of sport activities around Košice as well, for more or less serious skiing activities ,on downhill in a beautiful nature or countryside. Metropolis of the Eastern Slovakia is thanks to its location and resources an ideal place for individual or comfortable family trips in attractive area. The most attractive location for visitors is for example the valley of Cermel stream with the largest forest park in Košice with the children railway, which ends at the holiday centre Alpinka. The most visited attraction in the town is the ZOO, the biggest zoo in the Middle Europe. It is situated in the part called Kavečany, where you can try your adrenalin on frijoles ride. The other attraction is a popular observation tower, from there you can see the whole town like on fistful. A European curiosity is the cold geyser in Herľany, which is must to see. As well as few kilometers away area of Gemer with the castle Krásna hôrka and manor house Betliar. These are only some of what Košice and its surroundings can offers to its visitors.
